This is a technical column by the development team at Nexty Electronics.
We will share information about hardware development using the products we handle.
This time we will introduce our original board equipped with the ams-O STATIC RAMS RGBi IC "KRTBI D2LM31.31." This board was developed to make it easier to visually understand the RGBi functions, and to enable many customers to easily experience the benefits of RGBi.
In recent years, in-car requirements have become more sophisticated, with ambient lighting now playing a role in presenting information, creating emotions, and even enhancing the brand experience. With the spread of EVs, there is growing demand for day-to-night expression changes, luxury effects, and color control through driving modes and ADAS integration. This board is a useful platform for intuitively evaluating and verifying RGBi color and brightness.
What is RGBi?
RGBi is an LED optimized for automotive interiors, integrating three RGB color LEDs and an ASIC into a single package. It adds communication and driver functions to conventional RGB LEDs, enabling precise lighting control through communication with a microcontroller, simplifying the circuit configuration and reducing color variations during color mixing. By storing optical characteristics in the built-in memory at the factory, it is possible to mix and light the colors according to the target chromaticity point. Furthermore, a built-in TEMPERATURE SENSORS allows for real-time correction of chromaticity and brightness deviations due to temperature changes. Using hundreds of LEDs, it is possible to create dynamic lighting effects suitable for ambient illumination, such as dynamic full-color expression and smooth animation.
KRTBI D2LM31.31 Features
The KRTBI D2LM31.31 is an intelligent RGB device from ams-O STATIC RAMS that includes built-in red (R), green (G), and blue (B) LEDs, as well as a driver to control the R/G/B LEDs. An external microcontroller can address and control each device in a daisy-chain architecture*1 using an open system protocol.
Below are the main features of this device:
High color mixing accuracy
The brightness and color information of each RGB is stored in memory, and the duty can be set individually to match the target color mixture, and high PWM accuracy achieves high color mixture accuracy.
temperature compensation
By directly detecting the die temperature using TEMPERATURE SENSORS inside the package, changes in LED brightness and chromaticity due to temperature changes can be predicted and corrected.
High brightness mode
Equipped with two current modes: 10mA and 50mA.
Ensures visibility even in bright environments.
Simplifying the circuit
Compared to analog RGB LEDs, the circuitry can be simplified because the LEDs are equipped with functions such as TEMPERATURE SENSORS, memory, PWM, and TRANSISTORS.
Adopts OPEN Protocol
Any microcontroller that supports SPI can be used.
Noise resistant
Equipped with a noise-resistant CAN transceiver mode.
It can transmit signals over long distances.
*1 Daisy chain architecture
This refers to a method of connecting multiple devices in series. In this configuration, each device receives a signal from the previous stage and sends a signal to the next stage, simplifying wiring and making it easy to add devices. Up to 1000 KRTBI D2LM31.31 can be connected.
RGBi board
Overview
Our original RGBi board (board size: 350mm x 120mm) is equipped with 300 RGBi LEDs, enabling dynamic full-color and dynamic lighting effects. Each LED can be individually controlled via communication functionality, allowing for the free expression of a wide variety of colors, patterns, and animations.
composition
Equipped with CAN TRANSCEIVER, it uses 300 RGBi LEDs from ams-O STATIC RAMS, daisy-chained and arranged in a matrix. Controlled by a microcontroller via the CAN interface, it can easily display any desired image pattern.
Demo Introduction
Below is an example of a demo of the ams-O STATIC RAMS RGBi board introduced this time.
Gesture sensor + RGBi demo
- Connecting ADI gesture sensor board, NXT STM reference board, OTHERS relay boards and RGBi-equipped boards
- Gesture sensor recognizes swipes and shapes
- Output animation according to the recognition results
Voice recognition + RGBi demo
- Connecting the Infineon Traveo II evaluation board, microphone, LOUDSPEAKERS, and other relay boards to the RGBi-equipped board
- Recognizes voice input into the microphone and responds with animation and LOUDSPEAKERS output
Summary
This time, we introduced an RGBi board manufactured by ams-O STATIC RAMS, developed by Nexty Electronics. RGBi is designed for automotive interiors and is equipped with communication and driver functions. Its simple circuit configuration results in minimal color variation when mixing colors, and it uses hundreds of LEDs to achieve dynamic full-color expression and moving lighting effects.
