NEXTY Electronics Corporation (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Yasuhiro Kakihara; hereinafter “NEXTY Electronics”), the electronics trading subsidiary of Toyota Tsusho Group, participated in a sponsorship project for the Systems Design Lab attached to the School of Engineering of the University of Tokyo (Lab Director: Professor　Tadahiro Kuroda; hereinafter “d.lab”) in June 2022 to accelerate efforts to realize the ultra-smart Society 5.0 advocated by d.lab.

Society 5.0 was used for the first time in the 5th Science and Technology Basic Plan formulated by the Japanese Government in 2016, and refers to a new society following the hunter-gatherer society (Society 1.0), the agricultural society (Society 2.0), the industrial society (Society 3.0), and the information society (Society 4.0), and was proposed as the future society that Japan should aim for.

Society 5.0 will create a society in which all people and things are connected through the Internet of Things (IoT), and various kinds of knowledge and information are shared to solve challenges by creating completely new types of values. Artificial intelligence will provide the information people need when they need it, and technologies such as robots and autonomous vehicles will solve problems such as the low birthrate, aging population, rural depopulation, and inequality between rich and poor.

Semiconductors are indispensable for realizing Japan’s goal of Society 5.0. Digital innovation is essential and this requires semiconductors as the basic technology for transforming society from mass production and mass consumption to a society where wisdom creates value. d.lab is taking the perspective of solution creators and aims to reconstruct design methods and manufacturing ecosystems so that anyone with an idea for a system can instantly acquire a dedicated chip, helping to realize a human-centered ultra-smart Society 5.0.

By participating in d.lab and collaborating with researchers from startups and companies and students, NEXTY Electronics will continue to work toward the future Society 5.0 that Japan aims to achieve. In addition, we will contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals advocated by the United Nations, not only in Japan, but also by solving various issues around the world.
