"FlightSense™" ToF ranging sensor with applications in a wide range of fields

Laser-based time-of-flight (ToF) ranging sensors measure distance from the time of flight of emitted photons.
Taking advantage of its high-precision distance detection performance and flexibly configurable distance measurement area, it can be used in a variety of applications such as obstacle detection and gesture detection.
It is also small and consumes little power, making it easy to incorporate into compact applications.

Features

Highly accurate detection of various objects

Measurements can be made not only on the human body and walls, but also on liquid surfaces.
A driver incorporating a measurement algorithm that is less affected by the size, color, and reflectivity of the target is also provided free of charge.

Simultaneous measurement of multiple areas and detection of multiple targets

Our lineup includes products that can measure up to 64 areas simultaneously and products that can detect multiple objects within a measurement area.

Safe Class 1 laser

FlightSense™ products use Class 1 lasers.
It has no effect on the human body, including the eyes, so it can also be used in applications such as facial recognition systems.

Metasurface optical elements

Leveraging the semiconductor manufacturing technology we have cultivated over the years, we produce cutting-edge metasurface optical elements in our own factories.
It is used as a lens element in our latest product, the VL53L8.

Use Cases

Robots/Drones

By setting a threshold for the measurement value, an obstacle avoidance function can be realized for autonomous cleaning robots.
In addition, by measuring the exact distance to the ground, it can be used to assist drones in landing stably.

projector

By measuring multiple areas, the keystone correction function built into projectors can be achieved with a single ToF sensor.

Inventory Management System

Taking advantage of the high distance resolution of up to 1mm, it can be used to manage remaining product quantities in vending machines, etc.
When combined with products such as ST's 32-bit MCU "STM32WB・WL" that have built-in wireless communication functions, advanced remote product management can be achieved.

Autofocus Assist

Taking advantage of its ability to measure distance quickly even in dark places, it assists the autofocus function of cameras such as smartphones to focus more quickly.

Contactless Input Interface

This product can measure distances in up to 64 areas simultaneously, enabling flexible hand tracking such as detecting up, down, left, right, and diagonal swipes, as well as volume control based on distance.

Capacitive Sensing System
