CAPACITORS that combines the best of batteries and electrolytic capacitors, with no deterioration in characteristics even when charged or discharged with large currents
Vishay EDLC (electric double layer CAPACITORS)

Vishay, which develops various components for power circuits, offers a wide variety of CAPACITORS.
This page introduces EDLCs (electric double layer CAPACITORS). We will introduce their features, products, and use cases, so please take a look.

What is an electric double layer CAPACITORS?

Electric double layer CAPACITORS are commonly known by the abbreviation EDLC (Electric Double Layer Capacitor), and have the following basic structure.

Fig. 1 - Electrostatic Helmholtz EDLC I = 0

EDLCs exhibit almost no deterioration in their characteristics even after repeated charging and discharging, and can be charged and discharged up to 500,000 times. As a result, their lifespan is significantly longer than that of SECONDARY BATTERIES, making them suitable for applications requiring frequent charging and discharging with large currents.
The lifespan of an EDLC will become shorter as the ambient temperature and applied voltage increase.

Introducing Vishay's EDLC

Characteristics of Vishay EDLC

Vishay's EDLCs include the "EDLC ENYCAP" series shown below. One of the features of this series is that it has obtained AEC Q200/ and UL810A certification.
In addition, the electrolyte of this EDLC contains acetonitrile, which contributes to extending the lifespan by suppressing the increase in ESR (equivalent direct current resistance) at low temperatures. However, this is a very small amount of 1g, and it evaporates, so it is not a problem.
Vishay can also assist with EDLC life calculations, so please Inquiry.

Vishay's EDLC lineup is shown in the figure above.

The 225EDLC/235EDLC clears 1000 hours of accelerated testing at 85°C/85% RH with the rated voltage applied, and the sealing part does not expand due to this test.
On the other hand, the 230EDLC/235EDLC can be used at 3.0V, which exceeds the rated voltage of 2.7V for general EDLCs.
This increases the energy density of the EDLC by 20% compared to conventional models, contributing to extending the life of the board.

Use Cases

EDLCs are suitable for applications that require large current charging and discharging and a long lifespan. Examples of applications include the following:
In-vehicle applications (dash recorders, keyless entry, autonomous driving)
Smart meters, AGVs, and UPS (uninterruptible POWER SUPPLIES supplies) for consumer and industrial use
