Infineon, FINGGAL LINK, and NEXTY Electronics collaborate to develop an elderly safety monitoring system using 60 GHz millimeter-wave radar

NEXTY Electronics Corporation (“NEXTY Electronics”; Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo), Infineon Technologies (“Infineon”; FSE: IFX/OTCQX: IFNNY), and FINGGAL LINK CO., LTD. (“FINGGAL LINK”; Head office: Taito-ku, Tokyo), have announced today that they will collaborate to develop and launch an elderly safety monitoring system that is based on using 60 GHz millimeter-wave radar.

The millimeter-wave radar biometrics detection mechanism developed for the elderly care monitoring system by FINGGAL LINK uses 60 GHz millimeter-wave radar sensors, which provide outstanding motion detection. This enables non-contact measurement of vital information, even when the subject is clothed, including the person’s presence or absence, respiratory rate, heart rate, sleep information, and urinary incontinence. The system’s built-in thermosensor also provides non-contact measurements of body temperature. In addition, the built-in communication feature sends measured data to a cloud server, analyzes it with a proprietary algorithm, and can alert the user if the measured data exceeds a predetermined threshold, allowing for remote, real-time, accurate monitoring of biometric information.

The device is very compact, about the size of a postcard, has built-in sensors and communication capabilities, and can be mounted on a tabletop, wall, or ceiling.

The technology that provides non-contact and accurate biometrics detection, the key feature of this system, is the XENSIV™ 60 GHz Radar IC BGT60ATR24C, a high-performance radar sensor based on Infineon’s proprietary technology. More accurate than traditional infrared sensors, 60 GHz radar can detect a person’s movement, heartbeat, and breathing regardless of obstacles such as bedding or furniture, enabling precise, non-contact vitals sensing. Its compact size (6 mm x 6 mm) also helps in minimizing the size of the system’s terminal device.

To achieve even greater detection accuracy, NEXTY Electronics used the antenna design and modularization knowledge and expertise of Korea-based Smart Radar System Inc., in which it has invested. In addition to development support, NEXTY Electronics has signed an  agreement with FINGGAL LINK to provide sales support for the system and identify new needs for vitals sensing.

As an aging society, Japan’s shortage of human resources in medical and nursing care has become a societal issue. Furthermore, the number of elderly people living alone is increasing, creating a greater need for family members and others who live far away from the elderly to monitor their safety.

This millimeter-wave radar biometrics detection system will ease the burden on facilities that need to monitor the health of a large number of subjects, such as elderly care facilities, nursing homes, medical care facilities, and childcare facilities, while also making it possible to remotely monitor the health of elderly persons living alone.
